Delighted seniors at St Barnabas Senior Center in Echo Park, Los Angeles, are the stars of an award winning video, which provides simple tips to reduce the risk of experiencing a fall. The video, which won first prize in the National Council on Aging 2016 Falls Free® Video Contest, was created by the Communications and Health Self-Management teams at Partners in Care Foundation.
Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among adults aged 65 years and older. During 2014, approximately 27,000 older adults died because of falls and 2.8 million were treated in emergency departments for fall-related injuries. And those numbers are on the rise. The good news is that there are numerous initiatives in place across the country to raise awareness and help reduce the risk factors associated with falls.
Commenting on the first place win, Dianne Davis, Senior Director, Health Self-Management Services at Partners in Care said, “There are some very simple things that people can do to dramatically reduce the risk of experiencing a fall. We tried to convey these in the video in a fun and memorable way, helped enormously by the fantastic group of seniors who brought the whole thing to life. I think it’s evident from the video just how much fun everyone had! I hope people will share the video with family and friends. The more we can do to help educate people about how to prevent falls, the more seniors will remain active, independent and enjoying life.”
