MSSP Frequently Asked Questions

Does enrolling into MSSP affect health plan coverage or doctors?
No, MSSP does not make any changes to your health plan coverage or doctors.

Does enrolling into MSSP impact Medi-Cal eligibility?
No, receiving MSSP services does not impact your Medi-Cal eligibility, or other similar resources you are receiving, such as IHSS.

Do you need to be a citizen or resident to apply and enroll into MSSP?
If you have active Medi-Cal and an eligible aid-code, you could receive MSSP services. MSSP does not look at immigration status as a factor to apply and enroll.

What is the process to apply for MSSP?
To apply for MSSP, whether you are referring someone or making a self-referral, we recommend visiting our website to complete the MSSP referral form. After submission, an MSSP program assistant will contact the individual to complete an intake.  In addition, individuals can also call the MSSP office to conduct the intake process directly over the phone.

Do I need to refer online to apply for MSSP?
No, if you do not have access to the internet or a smart device, we do accept referrals over the phone. You can call Partners at their main office at 818.837.3775 and they will direct you to the appropriate MSSP office based on your catchment area.

How long is the enrollment process into MSSP?
The length of the enrollment process for MSSP can vary due to factors such as the number of referrals, staffing allocations and the nature of the request received. However, MSSP staff make every effort to manage each referral promptly. We aim to connect with referrals as quickly as possible to enroll new participants monthly.

What if I know someone that meets all the other criteria except having Medi-Cal coverage, what would you recommend doing?
To be eligible for MSSP, participants must be 65 years of age or older, live within the MSSP site service area, be appropriate for care management services, be at risk for placement in a nursing facility, and have Medi-Cal coverage. If someone meets all the criteria except for Medi-Cal coverage, we recommend applying for full-scope Medi-Cal benefits. Once, Medi-Cal is active, they can apply for MSSP along with other benefits.

What if the participant lives in a zip code outside of Partners’ catchment areas?
MSSP operates by zip codes and depending on where the participant falls under, that is the office that will provide them services. Partners has four MSSP sites, which include North Los Angeles, South Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Kern County. If the individual referred does not fall within Partners’ catchment areas, we will refer them to the appropriate MSSP site that does cover their specific area.

How long could someone stay enrolled with MSSP?
For as long as they would like to, and depending on what is best for the participant.
