Every year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 to celebrate the history, influence and culture of the U.S. Latinx and Hispanic communities. Hispanic and Latinx refers to a person’s culture or origin and are identified as those whose ancestors came from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Spain, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. According to the 2020 Census Bureau, the Hispanics and Latinx population have become the largest racial or ethnic group in California. They now represent 39.4% of Californians, which is about 15.6 million people.
History of Hispanic Heritage Month
National Hispanic Heritage Month was first introduced in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week by Congressman George E. Brown and 19 cosponsors. At the time Brown represented two heavily Latinx and Hispanic populated areas, the San Gabriel Valley and East Los Angeles, and he aimed to recognize the essential roles of these communities in American history. Observation of Hispanic Heritage Week started under President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968 and was expanded to cover a 30-day period by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, who recognized Hispanic voters as an integral part of the nation’s story. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988.
Notable days to remember during Hispanic Heritage Month is Mexico’s independence day, which is on September 16th, and Indigenous People’s Day, which is on October 11th.

This 30-day period is often celebrated with parades, ceremonies and various discussions surrounding the Hispanic and Latinx influence in American History. One notable event taking place in Los Angeles is the 14th Annual Edition of The Hola México Film Festival and will feature 20+ films and 20 short films. It is the largest Mexican Film Festival outside of Mexico and strives to highlight the best and brightest talents in Mexican cinematography.
